The next few weeks will be very busy with many springtime assessments. Please continue your reading at home and practice skills as much as you can with your child. It’s also important that they get a good nights rest and eat a healthy breakfast so they may perform their best! Thank you for your continued support.
In Literacy: This week our phonics focus was on the letter Oo. We focused on the short o sound as in otter and octopus. We also looked at short o in cvc words like dog and pop. Students worked with the _op word family this week and played some games to create words that would fit with the _op family. They are getting very good at working on these word family skills! Guided reading groups revisited sequencing. Each group used a non-fiction text about planting to help with the sequencing skill. Our writing focus has shifted to poetry. This week students learned about acrostic poems. Each child wrote one acrostic poem about spring and one about plants. We have also read aloud several different types of poetry.
In Math: This week we finished work on Topic 13, “Analyzing and comparing 2-d and 3-d shapes”. This week’s focus was on creating both 2-d (flat) and 3-d (solid) shapes. We played several mystery clue games as a means to compare the number of sides, vertices and flat surfaces. Students also used a variety of materials to build some shapes on their own. We also continued with the vocabulary of stack, slide and roll. Topic 13 tests will be coming home next week.
Science and Social Studies: This week we continued to study the weather and created our April weather graph to track and analyze our observations for the entire month. Students thought it was interesting that people talk about “April showers” but our data shows many sunny days. Now they are wondering if the flowers will grow?
This week we learned about plants and did some planting of our own. We are using an observation tool to track our observations. We wrote like scientists a few times to show what is happening to our seeds and soil. So far, not many changes have occurred. We will continue to monitor and observe our plants next week. Hopefully, we will start seeing some changes soon!
Upcoming Dates:
May 2 and 3- MAP testing for PM class
May 5- Words their Way spelling assessment
May 9 and 10- MAP testing for AM class
May 11- Bike to school day
May 15- Fluency Testing
May 17- Author visit
May 19- Career Day
May 24- Class Picnics
May 25- Field Day
